The engine computer has stored a fault code. It could be a sensor, ignition or emissions problem. If the light is flashing, the engine is misfiring: ease off and have it looked at straight away.

Is it steady or flashing?
A flashing light usually means something is happening right now, like an engine misfire. Ease off and get it checked straight away.
Check the levels
With the engine off and cool, check oil and coolant against the marks. Low levels explain a lot of red lights.
